We
are going to give you some useful pointers in this help sheet.
The taxi driving licence application form is self-explanatory.
Most are yes and no answers. When it comes to your references,
the council will ask for references from individuals who
most average people don’t have contact with. If a friend
has headed paper, that is clean and presentable, this will
be acceptable
to the council. If you happen to be in contact with someone
who is on the council list so much the better. Please inform
these referees that at some point the council will send one
of the photographs submitted by you to them to verify and
sign on the reverse.
Don’t
be put off or intimated by the conviction section. If you
have any convictions, either current or regarded as ‘spent’ please
put them on your application form. When your disclosure comes
back from the Criminal Records Bureau, all convictions will
be shown anyway and the Council will prefer your honesty.
Please state all convictions, even driving offences and penalty
points.
Please
remember, at some point, the council will do a driving licence
check with the DVLA. Make sure the address on your application
form agrees with the one on your driving licence. DVLA will
not submit information to the council for a different address.
This omission alone can add a 2 or 3 week delay to your application.
This application gets you your badge, which is the hardest thing to get. You
have to obtain this entirely on your own merit. We as an employer can’t
help with this phase. Once you have received your badge however, we can help
with car plating, meter and radio fitting and insurance. Even if you ultimately
don’t come to work here, you are advised to renew it every year, as they
are hard to get.
The total
cost of applying for a badge has just been increased to £235.50.
This includes a medical for the council, driving test, council
fees etc. After that, it is necessary to plate a vehicle,
which is in effect an advanced MOT and enables you then to
carry fare-paying passengers in your vehicle. This is currently £206
per year. We can help arrange this. If you don’t have
a suitable vehicle immediately, we normally have some hire
cars in stock. Hire cars cost from £120 per week depending
on the age and condition of the vehicle. You may want to
try the job out in a rental for a few weeks to see if the
job appeals to you before committing to the full cost of
a suitable car. That also is no problem!
The council
driving test has been known to put people off. The council
are not looking for things like stopping at corners, use
of handbrake etc, but that the standard of driving is suitable
to carry passengers. Crashing during the test would probably
be the only reason for failing. All tests are conducted in
the Rushcliffe Borough Council area so a working knowledge
of this would obviously be an advantage. If you don’t
know the area, contact me prior to the test and I can help
considerably with this.
We do know
that not everyone can get down to the office during the day.
However, as a 24-hour taxi company we can be available in
the evening if you would like to speak to someone in person
regarding your application. Please be aware though, that
at some stage you will have to come into our offices for
the application form to be stamped and signed. If you have
any queries or problems with the application, please feel
free to ring us on the number above and we will be pleased
to help you.
Just a
few words about us! Yellow Cars is one of the longest running
firms in Nottingham, we have been here since 1981. We do
have high standards, and have certain areas where we do not
lift passengers. This ensures the safety and security of
our drivers. We have very virtually no instance of robbery
or assault on any of our drivers. This policy has also helped
us attract an excellent client base, which includes some
major blue chip companies. Training is simple. An hour or
two spent in our control room will help you familiarise yourself
with the despatch procedure and will give you an insight
for when you first sit in your car and start driving. During
your training you will also be advised of the high standards

drivers and cars at all times, you will be regularly inspected
to see that this policy is being adhered too. Remember, you
will be driving around the area with our company name on
your car, therefore we expect due diligence at all times.

that you decide to proceed with your application and I look
forward to seeing or hearing from you soon.
